New Delhi: Deployment of armed forces personnel in Delhi was heightened by Delhi Police on Wednesday, instructing personnel to maintain strict vigil at Tikri, Singhu, and Ghazipur borders following the announcement by protesting farmers to persist with their ‘Delhi Chalo’ call.
This decision followed the farmers’ rejection of the GoI’s proposal to procure pulses, maize, and cotton crops through government agencies at the minimum support price (MSP) for a five-year period. The farmers opted to continue their protest, leading to increased security measures and disruptions in traffic on various routes, including Delhi-Gurugram and Delhi-Bahadurgarh.
In the recent round of talks on Sunday, a panel of three Union ministers proposed a five-year MSP agreement for pulses, maize, and cotton, but farmer leaders declined, stating it was not in their favor.
The Delhi Police directed security personnel at Tikri, Singhu, and Ghazipur borders to remain on high alert, anticipating potential traffic congestion for commuters, PTI reported.
The “Delhi Chalo” march is led by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha. The borders at Tikri, Singhu, and Ghazipur have heavy police and paramilitary deployment with multi-layered barricades, resulting in significant restrictions.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (outer) Jimmy Chiram assured sufficient deployment and vigilance at the Delhi-Haryana borders, said the news agency report.
The Delhi Police is prepared to prevent protesters and vehicles from entering Delhi, with 30,000 tear gas shells stocked for potential use. Checking vehicles on roads leading to the central part of Delhi may cause traffic congestion on Wednesday, according to officials.
