New Delhi: Farmer leaders announced their decision-making timeline for the ‘Delhi Chalo’ movement on Friday, stating that they will decide their next steps on February 29.
The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM), leading the ongoing protest at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Haryana and Punjab, have been advocating for various demands, including a legal guarantee for the Minimum Support Price (MSP).
KMM leader Sarwan Singh Pandher shared the plan during a media briefing at the Khanauri border point, indicating that the next major announcement regarding the ongoing agitation will take place on February 29.
In addition to this, a candle march was scheduled today, followed by the burning of effigies of the government of India on February 26.
This development comes after the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march was temporarily suspended for two days earlier in the week. The decision followed clashes at Khanauri that resulted in the tragic death of a protester and injuries to about 12 police personnel.
The incident occurred when some protesting farmers were attempting to move towards barricades.
Thousands of farmers have been persistently stationed at Khanauri and Shambhu with their tractor-trolleys and trucks, demanding a legal guarantee for the MSP, farm debt waiver, and other key issues.
The demands also include the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations, pension for farmers and farm laborers, no hike in electricity tariffs, withdrawal of police cases, justice for the victims of the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence, reinstatement of the Land Acquisition Act, 2013, and compensation for the families of farmers who lost their lives during a previous agitation in 2020-21.
