Kerala school introduces ‘Iris’, India’s first AI robot teacher

Kerala introduces its first generative AI teacher ‘Iris’.

Kerala: KTCT Higher Secondary School in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, has introduced Iris, the first humanoid AI teacher. Unveiled last month in collaboration with Makerlabs Edutech Private Limited, Iris is a product of the Atal Tinkering Lab (ATL), a 2021 NITI Aayog initiative aimed at enhancing students’ extracurricular activities.

Iris stands out as an innovative voice assistant designed for educational settings and DIY learning environments. Developed using Robotics and Generative AI technologies, the humanoid boasts versatility with interactive capabilities, a dedicated Intel processor, and a coprocessor for maneuvering tasks. The Android App interface allows users to control and interact with Iris, creating a personalised learning experience.

The multilingual AI teacher can speak three languages, tackle complex questions, and engage students with interactive learning experiences. Equipped with wheels for enhanced mobility, Iris marks a significant shift in Kerala’s education landscape.

Makerlabs Edutech, in an Instagram post, expressed pride in unveiling Iris, emphasising its commitment to pushing the boundaries of innovation. While the long-term impact of this AI teacher remains to be seen, Iris presents a glimpse into the future of education, where AI takes on a supportive role in the classroom.

This development aligns with the global trend of integrating AI into education to make learning more engaging and accessible. Iris has the potential to revolutionise traditional teaching methods, catering to different learning styles and personalising education for students.
