Iran has promised to retaliate following an attack carried out by Israel. The strike targeted and destroyed Iran’s consulate in Damascus, Syria, resulting in the deaths of seven people, including two Iranian generals.
Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, led by President Ebrahim Raisi, convened late Monday to discuss a response to the attack. Raisi stated that the attack will not go unanswered and emphasised that Israel will face consequences.
The strike, which targeted an Iranian diplomatic mission, represents a significant escalation in Israel’s actions against Iranian military officials.
It’s unclear whether Iran will directly retaliate, potentially sparking conflict with Israel and the United States, or continue to rely on its proxies, such as Hezbollah in Lebanon and Houthi rebels in Yemen.
Among those killed in the attack were General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, who played a key role in Lebanon and Syria, and his deputy, along with five other officers. Hezbollah condemned the attack and vowed revenge.
Tensions between Israel and Iran-backed groups have heightened in recent months, with increased attacks near Gaza and along the Lebanon border. Israel, which rarely confirms strikes against Iranian targets, has refrained from commenting on this latest attack.
