Israel has urged the United Nations Security Council to impose new sanctions on Iran, with its envoy emphasising the need to act swiftly against Iran and condemn its actions, according to a report by Agence France-Presse.

The call for sanctions comes amidst points raised by the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, who warned against further escalation following Iran’s recent attacks on Israel.

Guterres emphasised the urgent need for restraint, stating that neither the region nor the world can afford more conflict. He cautioned that the Middle East is on the edge of a significant conflict, urging immediate efforts to defuse tensions.

In response, Iran’s UN envoy defended Iran’s actions as a legitimate exercise of self-defense and emphasised that Iran does not seek escalation or war but will respond to any perceived threats or aggression.

Furthermore, Iran’s mission to the United Nations warned the United States to refrain from involvement in the conflict with Israel and suggested that the matter could be considered resolved for now. However, it cautioned that any future Israeli actions could result in a more severe response from Iran.

Iran launched a direct attack on Israeli territory in retaliation for what was widely perceived as an Israeli airstrike that destroyed Tehran’s consular building in Syria’s capital in April.
