‘Tel Aviv shows disrespect to council’: Russia condemns UN inaction on Israeli attack in Syria, calls for de-escalation

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

During an emergency United Nations Security Council meeting on Sunday, Russia’s Permanent Representative, Vassily Nebenzia, criticised the Council’s failure to address the Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate in Syria and urged for an end to the bloodshed in the Middle East.

Nebenzia expressed disappointment that the Council had not previously convened to discuss the incident on April 2, contrasting it with Russia’s initiative to hold an emergency briefing on the Israeli strike on the consular premises in Damascus.

He condemned Israel for not complying with UN Security Council resolutions, describing it as a clear disrespect towards the Council and its members, and a disregard for the Council’s decisions.

Nebenzia emphasised the necessity of halting the escalating violence, calling on the international community to take immediate action to de-escalate the situation in the region.

These statements follow remarks made by Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, who criticized Israel for not condemning Ukrainian strikes on Russian territories. Zakharova’s comments were made in response to the Israeli Ambassador’s earlier expectation for Russia to condemn Iran’s retaliatory attack on Israel.

Zakharova questioned Israel’s stance, reminding them of their lack of condemnation towards Ukrainian attacks on Russian regions and highlighting previous statements by Israeli officials supporting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s actions.
