Kargil: The National Conference (NC) in Kargil district of Ladakh faced a revolt on Monday as the local unit submitted mass resignations to the party high command.
A letter, posted by ANI on X, mentioned about the development.
This move arose after the NC high command directed the Kargil party cadre to support the INDIA bloc candidate, Tsering Namgyal, for the Ladakh parliamentary constituency, a directive that was met with refusal by the NC cadre in Kargil.
Qamar Ali Akhoon, Additional General Secretary of NC, announced the decision during a press conference, stating that the NC unit in Kargil had submitted a mass resignation letter due to the pressure from the party high command to support the Congress-led INDIA bloc candidate, which was deemed unacceptable by the Kargil leadership.
In response to this situation, a joint statement by various political and religious groups under the Ladakh Democratic Alliance declared their support for Mohammad Haneefa Jan as an Independent Candidate for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections in the Ladakh constituency.
The statement emphasized the unity of these groups across party and religious affiliations in promoting Jan’s candidacy.
The resignation letter from the Kargil NC unit expressed discontent with the NC high command’s insistence on supporting the INC candidate from Ladakh, which was perceived as acting against the interests of the people of Ladakh.
As a result, the party functionaries in Kargil felt compelled to resign en masse from all party positions, including Qamar Ali Akhoon’s resignation as Additional General Secretary of NC.
This development underscores the political tensions and divisions within the NC ranks in Ladakh ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, highlighting challenges in aligning party strategies with local sentiments and alliances.
