61 dead in TN’s Kallakurichi hooch tragedy; protests ensue in state assembly

Kallakurichi: The hooch tragedy in Tamil Nadu’s Kallakurichi has resulted in 61 deaths, according to the District Collectorate. Currently, 91 people are receiving treatment at the Government Kallakurichi Medical College and Hospital, where 32 have died and 20 have been discharged.

Ten patients were admitted to JIPMER in Puducherry, with six discharged and four deceased. Salem Medical College is treating 30 patients, with 21 deaths reported. Villupuram Medical College has four patients and four fatalities.

One person is admitted at Royapettah Greater Hospital in Chennai, and two have been discharged from Sri Sanjeevi Hospital. Overall, 136 people are hospitalized, bringing the total affected by illicit liquor consumption to 225.

Earlier, NCSC Chairman Kishor Makwana, TNCSC Deputy Chairman Puneeth Pandian, and DIG Sanmeet Kaur met with the victims’ families in Karunapuram. The Tamil Nadu assembly saw protests from AIADMK leaders, who were later suspended for disrupting proceedings.
