Doda: A cloudburst triggered flash floods in Thathri market, in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district, causing mudslides in several houses and along the Batote-Kishtwar highway, resulting in heavy traffic disruption. However, there have been no reports of injuries or fatalities, PTI reported quoting officials from the district.
The cloudburst, followed by flash floods around 3am on Friday, led to considerable mudslides impacting the entire Thathri town market area and several residential houses along the highway, with some vehicles becoming trapped in the debris, they said.
Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Thathri Masood Ahmed Bichoo stated that the mudslides were extensive due to the sudden cloudburst, but fortunately, the flash floods hit near the less populated Army gate area.
“Despite significant debris in the market area, there have been no major losses and restoration work is ongoing,” he said.
The SDM also mentioned that traffic on the highway has been partially restored and expected all debris in the market area to be cleared by the afternoon.
A previous cloudburst on July 20, 2017, had caused significant damage in Thathri town, washing away a dozen structures near the Jamia Masjid and injuring several people.
