Muscat: An attack at the Imam Ali Mosque in Wadi Al-Kabeer, Oman, resulted in five deaths and 15 injuries during a Majlis gathering, international media reported.
According to a foreign news agency, unknown assailants opened fire at the mosque in Muscat, Oman’s capital, Pakistan’s televsion network GNN reported.
During the attack, over 700 people were attending the Majlis. The shooting left five people dead and more than 15 injured, with most of the victims being Pakistani nationals.
The Royal Oman Police reported the incident, confirming the initial casualties and numerous injuries.
Notably, such attacks are rare in Oman, a nation known for mediating regional disputes.
Following the incident, the US embassy in Muscat issued a security alert, canceling all visa appointments on Tuesday.
The embassy advised American citizens to remain vigilant and follow local authorities’ instructions via the social media platform ‘X’.
AFP reported that people fled the mosque amid continuous gunfire, chanting “Ya Hussain, Ya Hussain.”
Police stated that all necessary safety measures have been implemented, and an investigation is underway to gather evidence.
