Iran protests ‘offensive’ Jesus depiction at Paris Olympics; summons French ambassador

Iran has summoned the French ambassador over what it perceives as an offensive portrayal of Jesus Christ during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics, according to reports from Iranian media.

Iran’s Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance condemned the depiction, emphasising that Jesus is revered as a prophet in Islam. The ceremony featured a performance involving Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper,” which included elements criticised as disrespectful to religious sentiments.

The event, held on the Seine River, showcased 6,800 athletes along a 6-kilometre route with 85 boats, broadcast globally through live performances and televised broadcasts. The Catholic Church of France voiced disappointment over what it described as scenes mocking Christianity.

Following the backlash, US-based technology company C Spire announced it would withdraw its advertisements from the Olympics, citing shock over the depiction of the Last Supper during the ceremony.
