Twenty-four people were killed and 17 injured as monsoon rains lashed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from July 29 through Thursday, Dawn reported quoting the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).
Excessive rainfall led to saturated flood basins, overflowing rivers, and overwhelmed drainage systems, causing widespread flooding. Most casualties were in Kohat, where 10 people, including six children, died.
The district administration, Rescue 1122, and local volunteers recovered the bodies. Non-food items (NFIs) like tents, mattresses, blankets, kitchen sets, and hygiene kits were distributed to affected families.
Upper Chitral experienced the most infrastructure damage, with 107 houses fully or partially destroyed by flash floods. Overall, 150 houses were damaged across KP, with 77 partially damaged and 73 destroyed.
Flash floods and house collapses also occurred in Hangu, Haripur, Mansehra, Lower Dir, Charsadda, Mohmand, Bajaur, and Abbottabad, where landslides were reported.
According to a PDMA weather warning, more monsoon showers are expected until August 6, potentially causing urban flooding and flash floods in various districts. Relief efforts are ongoing, and tourists are advised against traveling to the area.
