New Delhi: On Friday, the Supreme Court stated that it did not annul the controversial NEET-UG 2024 examination despite concerns of a paper leak, as there was no evidence of a systematic compromise in its integrity.
In the detailed explanation for its July 23 ruling, a bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra criticized the National Testing Agency (NTA) for inconsistent actions this year, which they said were detrimental to students’ interests, PTI reported.
The court provided several directives and extended the mandate of the Centre-appointed panel, led by former ISRO chief K Radhakrishnan, to assess the NTA’s operations and suggest exam reforms.
The panel is now tasked with submitting a report by September 30, detailing measures to address flaws in the examination system. Additionally, the court suggested the Radhakrishnan panel should develop a standard operating procedure to incorporate technological advancements to bolster the examination process.
The Supreme Court also emphasised that the issues identified during the NEET-UG exam need to be addressed by the Centre.
On July 23, the Supreme Court dismissed requests to cancel and retake the contentious exam, concluding that there was no substantial evidence to prove it was compromised by a “systemic breach” of its sanctity.
The interim verdict was a significant relief for the NDA government and the NTA, which were under intense scrutiny and criticism over alleged widespread malpractice in the prestigious exam held on May 5, including question paper leaks, fraud, and impersonation.
Over 23 lakh students appeared for the NEET-UG in 2024 to secure admission to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other related courses.
