Army chief Waker-Uz-Zaman will address the nation at 4 pm today.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has reportedly resigned and left the country on Monday amid some of the worst violence in the nation’s history, Hindustan Times reported.

According to BBC Bangla, Hasina is headed to Agartala, the capital of Tripura in India. However, there has been no official confirmation of her resignation or departure from Dhaka.

Reports indicate that Sheikh Hasina left the Bangladeshi capital on a helicopter with her sister. The private Jamuna television news channel reported that Hasina was forced to step down following massive protests against her government over a controversial quota system that reserved 30% of government jobs for relatives of veterans from the 1971 War of Independence.

The army chief is expected to address the nation shortly. Earlier, the government ordered a complete internet shutdown as protestors called for a “Long March to Dhaka,” but a government agency later gave a verbal order to restore broadband internet around 1:15pm on Monday.
