Ganderbal: Amid an assembly election campaign in Ganderbal, Zamir Abdullah, son of former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah, stressed upon the deep-rooted political legacy of his family in the region.
Speaking to reporters, Zamir said, “My great-grandfather, Sher-e-Kashmir, started his political career from Ganderbal. We have always had the support of the people here.”
Ganderbal is considered National Conference (NC) strong hold. The seat had in the past elected three generations of Abdullah family — NC founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah in 1977, his son Farooq Abdullah thrice in 1983, 1987 and 1996 and Omar Abdullah was elected in 2008.
Campaigning for NC, Zamir said that he will personally reach out to every household. “We are here for one purpose only, and that is to deliver the points of our manifesto to every household,” he said. He acknowledged the longstanding connection of his family with the district, adding, “My grandfather served the people here, and Omar Abdullah has also been an MLA from Ganderbal. This constituency has always been central to us.”
Addressing key issues, Zamir stressed upon the challenges faced by the people in Kashmirl, particularly unemployment and the rising influence of drugs on Kashmiri youth.
“People can’t talk freely here. We have unemployment, and drugs are becoming too prevalent among our youth,” he said, promising that his campaign would focus on tackling these pressing concerns through actionable policies.
