Srinagar: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday said that the Jammu and Kashmir legislative assembly has done its job following the passage of a resolution seeking the restoration of special status to the region.
The resolution, moved by Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary and seconded by Minister for Health and Medical Education, Sakeena Masood (Itoo), triggered strong opposition from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The BJP staged a protest as soon as the resolution was introduced, which intensified when Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather passed the resolution. This led to BJP MLAs storming into the well of the House in protest.
In response to the move, Omar stated, “The Assembly has done its job.”
Meanwhile, Member of Parliament from Srinagar constituency, Aga Ruhullah Mehdi, expressed gratitude for the resolution, praising the Omar Abdullah-led government for fulfilling its promise of moving the resolution on the first day of the Legislative Assembly’s business.
Ruhullah acknowledged the significance of the resolution but emphasised that the fight for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status does not end here.
“Only the doors have been opened today through the assembly,” he stated, stressing that the struggle would continue.
Ruhullah also highlighted that the majority of members were in favour of the resolution and took a swipe at the BJP, saying, “The BJP must not deliver sermons to the government on the Speaker. We have seen how the speaker treats us in the parliament.” He further dismissed the legitimacy of the Lieutenant Governor’s office, stating that it holds no meaning in a true democracy.
