Kulgam: Nine cases of jaundice have been reported in Khaloora village of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district, with all nine affected children in stable condition and under close medical supervision, officials said on Wednesday.

Locals informed Kashmir News Observer that the children developed jaundice due to contaminated water supplied to the area. They criticised the authorities for not taking adequate sanitation measures, despite multiple requests to clean the water supply system, which is believed to have accumulated dirt.

Dr A R Shan, Block Medical Officer of Kulgam, told KNO that out of 20 samples taken, nine children tested positive for jaundice. He confirmed that all of them were stable and being monitored closely.

He further stated that water samples from the village showed unsatisfactory results, attributing the cases to impure water. Residents have been advised to take necessary precautions, particularly to consume only boiled water. Health teams have been visiting the area regularly to monitor the situation.

Officials from the Jal Shakti department acknowledged the ongoing water supply issues and assured that a new water supply scheme would be operational soon. “The village is facing water supply issues, but a new scheme will be implemented shortly,” they said.
