hSrinagar: Over the past three years, more than 10 lakh people have been screened, with 1.2 lakh diagnosed with diabetes in Kashmir, according to the Directorate of Health Services Kashmir (DHSK).

On World Diabetes Day, health experts in the region warned that nearly half of those with diabetes remain unaware of their condition. Dr Shahnawaz Ahmad, an endocrinologist, told Kashmir News Observer that there is need for regular screenings, especially for those with a family history or risk factors like obesity and hypertension. He advised people over 35 to check their blood sugar annually and recommended daily physical activity to manage and prevent diabetes.

Dr Mashkoor from GMC Anantnag told the news agency that diabetes, a condition in which the body cannot effectively use insulin, is on the rise across both rural and urban areas of Kashmir. Common symptoms include frequent urination, fatigue, and blurred vision, though these signs often go unnoticed, leading to delayed diagnosis. The condition, if left uncontrolled, can result in serious complications, including heart disease, kidney damage, and nerve issues.

Dr Rafaqat, another endocrinologist, who spoke to KNO, described diabetes as a “silent killer” and stressed the importance of weight management, dietary control, and exercise. He warned against self-medication and urged people to seek professional guidance for managing diabetes.

Health experts continue to call for diabetes awareness and lifestyle modifications to curb the condition’s prevalence in the valley.
