Jammu: Shopkeepers, pony owners, and palanquin operators launched a 72-hour strike on Friday, opposing the Rs250-crore ropeway project proposed by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) in Katra, the base camp for pilgrims visiting the revered shrine in Jammu and Kashmir.

The protesters, raising slogans against the Shrine Board, demanded the project’s cancellation, citing fears of losing their livelihoods. The ropeway is planned to connect Tarakote Marg with Sanji Chhat along the 12km track to the shrine.

“We will not allow this project to proceed. For three years, we have opposed it and received assurances, but now the authorities have decided to move forward,” said Prabhat Singh, leader of the shopkeepers’ association. He argued that the project would harm the local economy, as thousands of families depend on earnings from businesses and services catering to pilgrims.

The protesters warned that their strike would continue beyond 72 hours if their demands are not met.

The SMVDSB recently approved the ropeway to provide a safer and faster journey for pilgrims, particularly benefiting those unable to undertake the 13-km trek. “The ropeway project will be a game changer,” said SMVDSB CEO Anshul Garg, emphasising its potential to enhance the pilgrimage experience.
