Hindu Sena claims Ajmer Dargah was a Shiva temple; file plea for ASI survey

A Hindu right-wing group has claimed that Ajmer Dargah was originally a Shiva temple and has sought an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) investigation to verify its history.

The court will decide whether the case is admissible and if the survey will proceed, The Observer Post reported.

Vishnu Gupta, the right-wing group Hindu Sena’s national president, has filed a petition claiming the land where the Dargah stands once housed the Sankat Mochan Mahadev Temple, dedicated to Hindu God Shiva.

He alleges that the Dargah Committee’s possession of the site is unlawful and demands its removal, also urging that Hindu worshippers be permitted to pray at the location.

“The historical truth must be uncovered. We have evidence, including Har Vilas Sharada’s 1910 publication, which asserts that a Hindu temple existed here before the Dargah. An ASI survey is crucial to confirm this claim,” The Observer Post quoted Gupta as saying.

The petition cites historical records and the Prakash text as evidence suggesting that a temple preceded the Dargah. If the court grants the survey, the Ajmer Dargah could face an examination similar to recent inspections of other disputed religious sites.

“The Hindu community deserves the right to worship here,” Gupta was quoted furher saying. “We are optimistic that the court will address our demands and order a survey to reveal the historical truth of this site.”
