New Delhi: The third day of the Winter Session of Parliament saw repeated disruptions as Opposition members protested over the Adani fraud case, the recent killing of five Muslim men in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal, and other issues, leading to adjournments in both Houses.

The Lok Sabha session was adjourned until 12 noon shortly after it began, following protests by Opposition members. Congress and Samajwadi Party representatives took to the well of the House, while others stood in the aisles, raising slogans on various issues.

Speaker Om Birla urged members to maintain decorum and allow the Question Hour to proceed, promising to address their concerns later. Despite his appeal, only one question was addressed before the session was adjourned after six minutes.

Opposition members demanded discussions on the Adani controversy and the violence in Sambhal. Meanwhile, the Adani Group clarified that neither Gautam Adani nor his nephew Sagar Adani had been charged with violations under the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act in a bribery case filed in a New York court.

The Rajya Sabha also faced disruptions, with Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar rejecting 18 notices under Rule 267, which sought to suspend scheduled business to discuss issues including a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) investigation into alleged misconduct by the Adani Group and rising crime in Delhi.

The rejection of these notices led to protests, forcing brief adjournments in the morning. When the House reconvened at 11:30am, the protests resumed, leading to another adjournment.

Dhankhar defended his decision, emphasising the importance of adhering to established parliamentary traditions and respecting the Chair’s rulings.

This is not the first disruption during the session. On Monday, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned in the morning over similar demands from the Opposition, while Tuesday saw no sitting of the House.
