Counter-terrorism and regional security were key topics during Pakistan-China military discussions on Wednesday.
General Zhang Youxia, Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC) of China and one of the country’s top military leaders, led a high-level delegation to Pakistan. He met Army Chief General Asim Munir for one-on-one talks, followed by broader delegation-level discussions.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the dialogue covered “matters of mutual interest, regional security dynamics, measures for regional stability, and enhancing bilateral defence cooperation.”
General Zhang acknowledged Pakistan’s counter-terrorism efforts, a critical focus given the rising attacks targeting Chinese nationals in Pakistan.
While reports suggest Beijing may adopt a more proactive role in safeguarding its citizens, Pakistan’s Foreign Office reiterated that counter-terrorism cooperation is grounded in mutual respect for sovereignty.
The discussions also addressed regional stability, including India’s role in the region and developments in Afghanistan, particularly concerning terrorist groups.
This visit follows an August trip by General Li Qiaoming, Commander of the People’s Liberation Army Ground Forces. Concurrently, Chinese troops are participating in “Warrior-VIII,” a joint counter-terrorism military exercise hosted by Pakistan, running until mid-December.
During the talks, General Munir highlighted the enduring resilience of Pakistan-China relations amid shifting global dynamics, expressing gratitude for China’s steadfast support.
General Zhang praised Pakistan’s commitment to their strategic partnership and reaffirmed China’s dedication to deepening bilateral ties.
The two leaders previously met in Beijing in April 2023, where they pledged to enhance military cooperation and safeguard shared interests while promoting regional peace and stability.
