Rajasthan court accepts plea claiming Ajmer Dargah as Shiva Temple, summons ASI

Ajmer Sharif Dargah

Ajmer: Days after the Shahi Jama Masjid survey in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, triggered protests and led to the police killing of five Muslims, including a minor, a Rajasthan court has agreed to hear a petition claiming that the Ajmer Sharif Dargah is a Shiva temple.

Ajmer West Civil Judge (Senior Division) Manmohan Chandel accepted the petition filed by Vishnu Gupta, the Hindu Sena’s national president, and issued summons to the Dargah Committee, the Ministry of Minority Affairs, and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

The next hearing is scheduled for December 20.

This comes a month after an Ajmer court dismissed a similar plea by the Hindu Sena, citing lack of jurisdiction. That case was set for further hearing on October 10.

The Sambhal incident followed a court-ordered survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid, initiated on November 19 after Gopal Sharma filed a petition claiming the site was previously a Harihar temple. Local leaders criticized the administration for acting with “unusual haste,” leading to protests and subsequent violence.
