Man opens fire at Sukhbir Badal; SAD says ‘major conspiracy to destabilise Punjab’

SAD leader Sukhbir Badal escapes assassination attempt at Golden Temple

Amritsar: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Sukhbir Singh Badal narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on Wednesday morning when an elderly man opened fire at the entrance of the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Badal, who was serving as a ‘sewadar,’ was unharmed.

The attacker, identified as former Khalistani member Narain Chaura, was overpowered by bystanders and taken into police custody. A video of the incident, shared by news agency PTI, shows the bullet striking the temple wall.

The attack occurred during the second day of Badal’s penance, prescribed by the Akal Takht for “mistakes” made by SAD’s government from 2007 to 2017.

Reacting to the incident, SAD leader Daljit Singh Cheema called it a “major conspiracy” to destabilise Punjab and criticised Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for failing to ensure the state’s safety.
