New Delhi: The BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government has charged journalist Mohammed Zubair, co-founder of Alt News, with sedition under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) for allegedly “endangering India’s sovereignty” through social media posts.

Zubair had shared a video of Hindutva leader Yati Narsinghanand making derogatory comments about Prophet Muhammad, which sparked protests. While Narsinghanand was placed under house arrest, Zubair was accused of inciting unrest and charged with promoting enmity, criminal intimidation, and malicious intent.

This is the latest in a series of actions against Zubair, who has faced multiple cases for exposing hate speech and misinformation. Journalist bodies and opposition leaders have condemned the charges, calling them a targeted attack on press freedom and dissent.

Meanwhile, the Press Club of India has condemned the Uttar Pradesh police’s filing of an affidavit in the Allahabad High Court, accusing Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair of “endangering the sovereignty and unity of India”.
