Agartala: Tripura police have arrested seven persons and suspended three police officers following a security breach at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala during a protest against the persecution of minorities in Bangladesh.

The protesters reportedly entered the commission’s premises, vandalised property, and desecrated the Bangladesh flag, as stated by Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

A police official confirmed that two sub-inspectors and a sergeant were suspended for negligence, while a DSP was relieved of duty.

The arrested persons face charges including trespassing, rioting, and assaulting public servants.

The action followed a statement from India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressing regret over the incident and reaffirming the need to protect diplomatic and consular properties. Security at the commission and the Agartala-Akhaura border has since been tightened.

The protest outside the commission was reportedly linked to the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, a former ISKCON monk, and was part of ongoing demonstrations in Tripura. While protesters breached the outer barricades and removed the Bangladesh flag, they did not access the main office.

Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned the incident, accusing local law enforcement of failing to prevent the attack and calling it a violation of diplomatic norms under the Vienna Convention. The ministry demanded a thorough investigation and measures to prevent similar incidents.

Meanwhile, protests against minority persecution in Bangladesh spread to Assam, where Congress members criticized India’s Neighbourhood First policy, claiming it had failed to address such issues.
