Khalid must remain at home or at the specified wedding venues and is prohibited from using social media, as per bail condition
New Delhi: A Delhi court on Wednesday granted interim bail to former JNU student Umar Khalid for seven days to attend his first cousin’s wedding and meet relatives. Khalid is an accused in the alleged conspiracy behind the Northeast Delhi violence.
In his plea, Khalid informed the court that his cousin’s wedding would take place on January 1 at Masjid Ishaat Islam, Abul Fazal Enclave, New Delhi, followed by a nikah and dinner at Kalindi Kunj. He also mentioned pre-wedding ceremonies, including haldi and mehendi, on December 30 and 31.
Khalid expressed a desire to meet relatives, particularly his sister visiting from the US, and clarified that he would not attend the wedding reception scheduled in Nagpur, choosing to stay in Delhi instead.
Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai of Shahdara District Court granted the interim bail, allowing Khalid to be out from the morning of December 28 to the evening of January 3, 2025, on furnishing a personal bond of Rs 20,000.
As part of the bail conditions, Khalid is restricted to meeting only family members, relatives, and friends. He must remain at home or at the specified wedding venues and is prohibited from using social media.
Khalid, along with others, faces charges of orchestrating the Northeast Delhi violence between February 23 and February 25, 2020. He has been booked under multiple sections of the IPC, the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, the Arms Act, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Meanwhile, Khalid’s regular bail plea is still pending before the Delhi High Court. During a hearing on December 6, his counsel argued that out of the 34 offences against him, Khalid has either completed the sentence or served more than half of it in several cases.
