Israel main beneficiary of crisis unfolding in Syria, says Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that Israel is the primary beneficiary of the ongoing crisis in Syria, commenting on Israeli military actions following the collapse of Bashar Assad’s government.

During his annual year-end press conference, Putin acknowledged Israel’s national security concerns but condemned the seizure of Syrian territories, including the recent Israeli advances into the Golan Heights. He emphasized that Russia’s stance is firm in opposing the occupation of Syrian land.

“Regardless of one’s opinion on Israel’s actions, Russia condemns the capture of Syrian territories,” Putin said. He added that while Israel is addressing security issues, Russia hopes West Jerusalem will eventually withdraw its forces from Syria. However, he raised concerns over Israel’s troop build-up in the region, suggesting intentions to occupy the Golan Heights.

Putin also noted that some local populations in the area had reportedly requested annexation to Israel, creating further complications. He stressed that any resolution regarding Syria’s territorial integrity must align with the UN charter and respect the principle of self-determination.

Since the fall of Assad’s government, Israel has launched numerous airstrikes on Syrian ports, airfields, and arms depots, while expanding its presence beyond the demilitarized zone in the Golan Heights. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has defended these actions, citing the need to prevent jihadi groups from threatening Israeli communities along the border.

Israel’s government has also announced plans to double the Jewish population in the Golan Heights and strengthen the region. “We will continue to hold it, develop it, and settle it,” Netanyahu stated.
