The United States is bracing for a dramatic winter shift as Arctic air sweeps across the eastern two-thirds of the country.
The polar vortex, a powerful atmospheric phenomenon, is set to unleash frigid conditions across the eastern US.
This occurs when the vortex weakens and shifts southward, allowing icy Arctic air to plunge temperatures to dangerously low levels. Some regions may experience temperatures up to 30 degrees below normal, marking a stark contrast to last winter’s record warmth.
According to CNN, these will likely be the coldest temperatures of the season, affecting over 70% of the US population.
The chill will persist through January, with increased chances of snow in many areas.
The initial wave of cold air will hit the north-central US by Wednesday, bringing single-digit or teen temperatures to Montana, the Dakotas, and Minnesota.
The cold air will continue to spread south and east, while the West largely avoids the extreme cold.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) warns of a significant pattern change, forecasting below-normal temperatures from the Northern Plains to the East.
The National Weather Service describes the polar vortex as a large area of low pressure and cold air surrounding both poles. It is strongest in winter and can bring Arctic air southward during disruptions.
