Srinagar: Almost every winter, Kashmir witnesses tragic deaths as people try to keep warm in the extreme cold, only to succumb to suffocation due to lack of ventilation or similar issues.

A recent incident on January 5 in the Pandrathan area of Srinagar claimed the lives of five family members, including a month-old infant and an 18-month-old boy. The family, originally from Baramulla, was living in a rented house when they died from suffocation caused by carbon monoxide.

The incident, like many others, occurred because heating devices such as gas heaters, coal bukharis, or kangris were used in a closed space without ventilation. Carbon monoxide, an invisible and odorless gas, builds up in such situations and can quickly become fatal.

To prevent such incidents, it is important to ensure proper ventilation, especially when using heating appliances. A window or vent should always be left slightly open to allow fresh air to circulate. Heaters should not be kept running while sleeping, and regular maintenance of these devices is necessary to ensure safety.

The Pandrathan deaths is a reminder of the risks associated with heating methods in winter. Awareness about these dangers and simple precautions can save lives. It is important for families to take these measures and for authorities to promote awareness and encourage the use of safer heating options. Let this serve as a call to action to prevent further loss of life.
