Sambhal: The Sambhal district administration on Monday issued notices to owners of 12 shops allegedly built on encroached government land near a mosque – known as Thanewali Masjid as it is located in front of the Kotwali police station — in Sambhal city, giving them a 24-hour deadline to remove the structures or the shops will be demolished using a bulldozer.

Akarm Mochan Koop is among 19 historic wells in the city undergoing restoration as part of a heritage conservation initiative. On Friday, district magistrate Rajendra Pensiya ordered the excavation and restoration of the well, emphasising the need to clear encroachments.

During a meeting with shop owners on Sunday, the SDM underscored the significance of preserving the site, stating that preliminary investigations revealed the shops had encroached on public roads, narrowing the area.

“Of the 12 shops identified, 11 owners claim to pay rent to a mosque located behind the premises. All shopkeepers have been asked to vacate voluntarily, failing which legal action and forced removal will follow,” the SDM said, as per PTI.
