A new wildfire rapidly spread through northern Los Angeles County on Wednesday, scorching over 9,000 acres just hours after it started.

The Hughes Fire ignited north of Castaic, prompting sweeping evacuation orders that forced tens of thousands to flee, with other nearby communities on alert for potential evacuations.

Initially reported at 50 acres around 10:53 am local time, the fire quickly grew amid red flag warnings, reaching 9,200 acres by 8.27pm. CalFire reported that the blaze, which remains uncontained, spread into Ventura County.

This fire is the latest in a series to hit the greater Los Angeles area since January 7, including the Palisades Fire in the Pacific Palisades and the Eaton Fire in Altadena, which collectively claimed 28 lives. Despite extensive firefighting efforts, the Palisades Fire is now 68% contained, and the Eaton Fire is 91% contained after causing widespread destruction and displacing thousands of residents.
