Er Rashid’s son, AIP workers detained in Srinagar during protest for his release

Member of the Legislative Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir, Khursheed Ahmad Shiekh, and several workers were detained while attempting to hold a day-long hunger strike in Srinagar.

Srinagar: Several workers of the Awami Ittehad Party (AIP), along with party chief’s son, were detained on Friday while attempting to hold a day-long hunger strike in Srinagar, demanding the release of their party head and Baramulla MP, Sheikh Abdul Rashid, also known as Engineer Rashid, police said.

The AIP workers had gathered at Sangarmal Shopping Complex after authorities denied them permission to protest near Pratap Park in Lal Chowk. However, police were already present at the new location and detained several workers, including Rashid’s son, Abrar, taking them to Kothibagh Police Station.

Before his detention, Abrar told reporters that preventing his father from attending Parliament was a “murder of democracy.” Rashid has been in jail for over five years and is not being allowed to take part in the session, he said.

The AIP stated that the protest was in solidarity with Rashid, who has begun an indefinite hunger strike in Tihar Jail, PTI report. Rashid won the Baramulla Lok Sabha seat last year, defeating former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and People’s Conference leader Sajad Gani Lone.
