Srinagar: On the occasion of World Cancer Day, observed annually on February 4, health experts have stressed the importance of early detection, preventive measures, and improved access to treatment to combat the growing burden of cancer.

This year’s theme highlights the need to bridge disparities in cancer care and ensure equitable treatment for all. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), nearly 10 million people die from cancer each year, but studies suggest that one-third of cases are preventable through lifestyle changes and timely screenings.

Medical professionals have urged people to adopt healthier habits, including a balanced diet, regular exercise, tobacco avoidance, sun protection, and routine screenings to reduce cancer risk. Experts also emphasise the importance of early diagnosis, which improves survival rates.

Across India, hospitals and healthcare organisations are conducting awareness programmes, free screenings, and counselling sessions to educate the public on cancer prevention and treatment options.

The day serves as a global call to action to support cancer patients, invest in research, and push for stronger healthcare policies.
