Gujarat: Hindu woman’s property sealed after sale to Muslim buyer, Disturbed Area Act invoked

Gujarat's Baroda/Vadodara residents protest over the allocation of a flat to a Muslim woman in a housing complex under the Chief Minister housing scheme in 2024.

Surat: A Hindu woman in Surat who sold her property to a Muslim buyer found it sealed by authorities in early February, citing a possible violation of the Disturbed Areas Act, Maktoob Media reported.

The move came after Hindu residents of the seller’s housing society objected to the transaction and filed complaints with the Surat district collectorate.

According to a report by Indian Express, some residents launched a hate campaign against both the seller, who lived in Salabatpura, and the buyer, also from the same area, even though the latter had only paid a token amount for the property.

Authorities stated that the sale violated provisions of the Disturbed Areas Act, which governs property transactions in communally sensitive zones. Residents argued that it breached Sections 5(a) and 5(b) of the Act.

As per the law, anyone intending to sell property in such areas must seek approval from the district collector, who reviews the case, consults relevant parties, and decides whether to permit or reject the sale.

Last year, a similar protest was staged by residents of Baroda/Vadodara against the allocation of a flat to a Muslim woman in a housing complex under the Chief Minister housing scheme.
