Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party President Mehbooba Mufti urged DGP, JK police to  ensure justice for the family of Makhan Din and also prevent such tragic cases in the future.

In Kathua’s Billawar area, 25-year-old Makhan Din from Perody was reportedly detained on allegations of being an Over Ground Worker (OGW). He, according to reports, was subjected to ‘brutal torture’ while in custody, allegedly forced into a confession, and later found dead under mysterious circumstances.

In a post on X, Mehbooba Mufti wrote, “Weeks have passed since the tragic death of Makhan Din yet no action has been taken.”

“No order for a judicial enquiry or even any form of support or compensation for the bereaved family. The most concerning part is that SHO Bilawar who allegedly drove the victim to suicide is still at large.” she added.

“The issue simply doesn’t end here – many innocent individuals like Makhan Din remain arrested on false charges of militancy by the same officer and could face the same tragic fate unless action is taken.” Mehbooba Mufti wrote.

“We urge DGP JK Police to intervene and ensure justice for the family and also prevent such tragic cases in the future,” the post reads.

Earlier, reacting to the killings of two Kashmiris – one in Kathua and another in Sopore – Nasir Aslam Wani, advisor to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, said that the situation in the region is not under the control of the elected government.

“The situation in Kashmir is not good, and unfortunately, the elected government led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is not in control,” Wani stated.

He further claimed that security-related decisions are being taken ‘without consulting the elected government’.

Later, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah termed both Kathua and Baramulla incidents highly unfortunate stating that he has taken up both incidents with government of India.

Omar, according to his statement, insisted the GoI to enquired the incidents in time bound and transparent manner.

Taking on to micro-blogging platform X, CM Omar wrote, ” I have seen the reports of excessive use of force & harassment of Makhan Din in police custody in Billawar leading to his suicide and the death of Waseem Ahmed Malla, shot by the army under circumstances that are not entirely clear.”

He added, “Both these incidents are highly unfortunate and should not have happened. J&K will never be completely normalised and free of terror without the cooperation of & partnership with the local population. Incidents like these risk alienating the very people who we need to carry with us on the road to complete normalcy.”

“I have taken up these incidents with the Union Government & insisted that both incidents are inquired into in a time bound, transparent manner. The Government in J&K will also order its own inquiries,” reads the post.
