New Delhi: A report submitted by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has revealed alarming levels of faecal coliform—microbes found in human and animal waste—in the river where devotees are bathing during the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj.
According to an NGT order dated February 17, citing the CPCB report, river water quality at all monitored locations failed to meet primary bathing standards due to high faecal coliform levels.
The massive influx of pilgrims, especially on auspicious bathing days, further contributed to the contamination, The Hindu reported.
The CPCB submitted its findings to the NGT on February 3. The order also referenced documents sent by the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board’s (UPPCB) Central Laboratory on January 28, which confirmed high levels of faecal and total coliform at multiple sites
Additionally, the NGT noted that the UPPCB had not submitted a comprehensive report as per court directives. As a result, the tribunal has summoned the UPPCB member-secretary for a virtual appearance at the next hearing on February 19.
