CPJ welcomes Kashmiri journalist Majid Hyderi’s PSA quashing

A days after High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh quashed the detention order of Kashmiri journalist Majid Hyderi under the Public Safety Act (PSA), Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has welcomed the decision.

“CPJ welcomes a ruling quashing the detention of Kashmiri journalist Majid Hyderi, who has been held since Sept 2023 under the Jammu & Kashmir Public Safety Act. Authorities must ensure his freedom and stop using draconian laws to silence the press,” CPJ wrote X while reposting a news about journalist’s PSA quashing.

On Wednesday, Justice V K Chatterjee quashed the detention of Hyderi under PSA, advocate Mohammad Yousuf Bhat, counsel for the journalist, told PTI.

Hyderi was arrested in September, 2023 on charges of extortion and defamation. He was booked under the PSA and lodged in Kot Bhalwal Jail.

The HC had also dismissed a petition filed by advocate Mian Abdul Qayoom challenging his detention under the PSA.

Qayoom was arrested last year in December in connection with the murder of advocate Babar Qadri in 2020.
