Srinagar: Authorities on Tuesday prevented a key meeting of the Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU) at the residence of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, where religious leaders from across Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, and Kargil were scheduled to deliberate on the Waqf (Amendment) Act, Mirwaiz said.
Mirwaiz, who heads the MMU, said the meeting was called to peacefully discuss the implications of the new Waqf law and frame a joint response. “It is strange that even a discussion to deliberate on this serious issue and respond peacefully by Muslim scholars and religious institutes in this Muslim-majority region is barred,” he posted on X.
He added that while political parties in the Indian Parliament were allowed to debate the bill freely, the same space is being denied to Muslim political and religious leaders in Jammu and Kashmir.
Despite the disruption, MMU has decided to go ahead with its joint resolution. The statement prepared in consultation with all members will now be read out during Friday sermons in mosques and religious gatherings across the region.
Mirwaiz also said MMU stands firmly with the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) and will support any course of action the Board undertakes on the issue.
