MK Stalin sets up panel to recommend measures for Tamil Nadu’s autonomy

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Tuesday announced in the state assembly the formation of a committee to explore ways to enhance the state’s autonomy, Hindustan Times reported.

The move comes amid ongoing friction between the DMK-led government and Governor RN Ravi, particularly over the delay in approving key bills.

The panel will be led by former Supreme Court judge Kurian Joseph, alongside former IAS officers Ashok Vardhan Shetty and MU Nagarajan.

Its primary mandate is to study and recommend measures to expand state powers and reinforce cooperative federalism. The committee is expected to submit an interim report by January 2026, with a full report due by 2028.

Stalin said the aim is to improve government of India-state relations through legal and administrative suggestions. “This committee will conduct research and recommend measures to strengthen the relationship between the state and Union government,” he said.

He also directed the panel to examine the possibility of reclaiming subjects that were shifted from the State List to the Concurrent List. “The committee will legally explore how to retrieve those entries,” he added.
