‘Divisive & insensitive’: Owaisi, Congress MP Imran Pratapgarhi slam Modi over ‘puncture’ remark

Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi.

Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi’s recent statement suggesting that Muslim youths wouldn’t be repairing punctures if Waqf properties had been properly utilised has drawn sharp criticism from opposition leaders and civil society groups.

Critics accuse Modi of perpetuating stereotypes and diverting attention from pressing issues like unemployment.

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi stated, “If the ideology and resources of the Sangh Parivar had been used in the country’s interest, Modi wouldn’t have had to sell tea.” He further questioned the government’s contributions to the welfare of poor Indians, both Hindus and Muslims, over the past 11 years .

Congress MP Imran Pratapgarhi criticised the language, saying, “Such language is used by trolls on social media. It does not befit the dignity of the Prime Minister’s office.” He said that the youth of the country, regardless of religion, are facing unemployment and lack of education .

The Wire reported that the term “puncture-walla” has been used as an anti-Muslim slur by right-wing groups in recent years. Modi’s reference could be seen as reinforcing such stereotypes, the report said.

Waqf properties are assets donated for religious or charitable purposes under Islamic law. The management and utilisation of these properties have been subjects of debate, with recent amendments to the Waqf Act aiming to increase transparency and prevent misuse. However, critics argue that the government’s approach may undermine the autonomy of Waqf institutions and disproportionately affect the Muslim community.
