Assistant professor alleges assault by ‘Indian Army personnel’ in Rajouri

Rajouri: Dr Liaqat Ali, Assistant Professor at Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), Maidan Garhi, New Delhi, has alleged he was assaulted by personnel of Indian Army in Rajouri’s Nowshera tehsil while en route to attend a family wedding.

In a  statement on Facebook, Dr Ali—who said he comes from a family with deep ties to the Indian Army—stated, “My entire family is in the Indian Army. I’ve always been proud of that… But today, what I experienced shook that pride to the core.” He said he was struck on the head with a weapon and called the incident a reminder of how easily a system can target any person without accountability. “Has justice now become the privilege of the uniform alone?” he asked.

Reacting to the incident, Thakur Yashuvardhan Singh, additional spokesperson of the National Conference Kalakote-Sunderbani, issued a statement of condemnation.

“Strongly condemn the brutal and inhumane assault on Professor Dr Liaqat Ali of Assistant Professor at IGNOU, New Delhi University, which took place in Nowshera Tehsil while he was en route to attend a family wedding. The professor, accompanied by his brothers and relatives—some of whom serve in Indian paramilitary forces—was mercilessly beaten by individuals wearing Indian Army uniforms. This heinous act, captured in a heartbreaking video statement by the victim himself, is a stain on the values of justice, professionalism, and human dignity.”

He said,  “It is utterly unacceptable that those entrusted with the nation’s security and bound by a code of discipline and honour would be involved in such disgraceful behaviour.”

There has been no official comment from the Indian Army or civil authorities as of now.
