Liberal Party wins Canada election, Carney to remain PM

Prime Minister Mark Carney.

The Liberal Party has won Canada’s federal election, securing Prime Minister Mark Carney a full term in office.

The victory comes amid tensions with the US, including trade war threats and provocative remarks from President Donald Trump about making Canada the 51st American state.

It is yet to be confirmed whether the Liberals have secured a majority in the 343-seat Parliament or will need support from other parties. A party requires 172 seats for an outright majority.

Carney, 60, a former central banker with no prior political experience, became prime minister in March following Justin Trudeau’s resignation. He will now form a new cabinet.

His government faces external pressure from the US and domestic challenges such as inflation and immigration.
