New Delhi: The government of India has directed several states to conduct security mock drills on Wednesday, May 7, to enhance civil defence preparedness in light of heightened tensions with Pakistan following the April 22 attack in Pahalgam, sources told NDTV.

This move carries historical weight, as the last such nationwide drill was held in 1971, the year India and Pakistan fought a war on two fronts.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, states have been asked to activate air raid warning systems, train civilians and students on protective measures during hostile attacks, enforce crash blackouts, camouflage vital installations at the earliest, and update and rehearse evacuation plans.

The situation along the border remains tense after the Pahalgam attack, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians.

Since then, Pakistan has opened fire on Indian posts along the Line of Control for 11 straight nights, prompting a strong response from India, as per defence officials of India.
