Narendra Modi.

New Delhi: Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi on Monday expressed deep anguish over the April 22 militant attack on pilgrims in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, calling it a “brutal assault based on religion” and a “personal pain” for him.

Speaking at a public event, Modi said the attack had shaken the collective conscience of the India, but also united the country in grief and resolve.

“This wasn’t just a terror attack; it was an attack on the soul of India. People were targeted because of their religion, and this pain is personal to me,” the Prime Minister said.

The Pahalgam attack, which claimed the lives of 26 tourists, including a local horse ride operator, has been attributed to cross-border militants elements.

Intelligence reports have pointed to involvement by Pakistan-backed groups, with the National Investigation Agency (NIA) leading the probe.
