‘Mysore Pak is now Mysore Shree, Moti Pak is Moti Shree, Gond Pak is Gond Shree’: Jaipur shops rename sweets amid India-Pak tensions

Though the term ‘Pak’ in these sweets has no connection to Pakistan—it actually means "sweet" in Kannada and refers to the sugar syrup used in recipes like Mysore Pak—the renaming is symbolic.

New Delhi: Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, sweet shops in Jaipur, Rajasthan, have started renaming popular sweets—most notably ‘Mysore Pak’—to avoid the word ‘Pak’.

A local shopkeeper told NDTV that they have replaced ‘Pak’ with ‘Shree’ in the names of various sweets. For instance, ‘Moti Pak’ is now ‘Moti Shree’, ‘Gond Pak’ is ‘Gond Shree’, and ‘Mysore Pak’ has become ‘Mysore Shree’.

Though the term ‘Pak’ in these sweets has no connection to Pakistan—it actually means “sweet” in Kannada and refers to the sugar syrup used in recipes like Mysore Pak—the renaming is symbolic.

This change follows rising tensions after a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam on April 22, which claimed 26 lives. India, having traced the attack to cross-border involvement, launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 to target militant camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir (PaK).

Pakistan responded with missile and drone strikes, which were successfully intercepted. In retaliation, India targeted Pakistani airfields. A ceasefire was agreed upon on May 10, bringing the conflict to a halt.
