Saudi Arabia is poised to lift its 73-year-old ban on alcohol sales by 2026, permitting limited consumption in approximately 600 designated tourist locations. This policy shift is part of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 initiative, aimed at diversifying the economy and enhancing its global tourism appeal ahead of major events like Expo 2030 and the FIFA World Cup in 2034.
Under the new regulations, alcoholic beverages such as wine, beer, and cider will be available in select venues, including five-star hotels, luxury resorts, and expatriate compounds. However, spirits and drinks with an alcohol content exceeding 20% will remain prohibited. The sale and consumption of alcohol will be confined to these licensed establishments, with the ban continuing in public spaces, private residences, and retail outlets.
Saudi authorities emphasise that the controlled rollout will uphold Islamic values, with strict licencing requirements, trained personnel, and compliance mechanisms in place.
