New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday denied reports that it plans to feature Col Sofia Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh as faces of its election campaign.
The clarification came in response to a media report claiming that Col Qureshi and Wing Commander Singh — who recently gained public attention for leading India’s press briefings during Operation Sindoor — would be the prominent figures in an upcoming women-centric campaign. This campaign was reportedly set to be launched to mark 11 years of the Narendra Modi-led government on June 9.
Refuting the report, BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), calling the news “fake.”
“This is Fake News,” Malviya wrote, asserting that the party has no intention of using either Col Qureshi or Wing Commander Singh as campaign faces.
He further clarified that recent remarks made by BJP Minority Morcha president Jamal Siddiqui were being wrongly interpreted.
“The comments made by Jamal Siddiqui have been misconstrued,” Malviya said. “He merely pointed to Col Qureshi as an inspiring example of an empowered Muslim woman within the community. There was no suggestion of her being involved in any political campaign.”
The BJP has thus made it clear that the armed forces personnel in question will not be part of its campaign strategy, emphasising respect for their professional roles and distancing them from political use.
