Srinagar: A large group of distressed families gathered at the Press Colony in Srinagar on Sunday, appealing to authorities for the immediate evacuation of their loved ones, who are currently stranded in Iran.
The families of students studying in Iran voiced their concerns and called for urgent government intervention to ensure their safe return.
The families, many of whom have been anxiously waiting for weeks, expressed deep frustration over the delay in evacuation efforts.
They highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by their children amid war in the country.
The group demanded that the Jammu and Kashmir administration, along with the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, take immediate action to facilitate their evacuation from Iran.
They also urged local representatives to intensify their efforts in coordinating with the Iranian government to ensure the safety and timely return of the students.
Earlier, Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) shared helpline numbers for Kashmiri students studying in Iran.
The association said, “Numerous students have reported hearing air raid sirens, experiencing tremors, and witnessing visible military activity near their residential areas that was raising serious concerns over their safety.”
Nasir Khuehami, national convenor of the association, said, “We have been receiving distress messages and calls from Kashmiri students in different parts of Iran, especially in cities impacted by the ongoing conflict. Students are anxious and fearful due to the rapidly deteriorating situation.”
He said that the association is in close coordination with the office of the External Affairs Minister and is actively preparing a detailed list of affected students to be submitted to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) for urgent intervention and possible evacuation, in case the situation escalates further.
He added that the Association is in constant touch with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the Indian Embassy in Tehran, and the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Ministers’ Office. “All necessary preparations are being made to facilitate communication, ensure students’ safety, and press for timely evacuation if required,” Khuehami added.
Khuehami added that, “Around 1,300 Kashmiri students are currently stranded in Iran, expressing deep fear and anxiety.”
