New Delhi: Defence Minister of India Rajnath Singh is set to visit China on June 24 and 25, marking the first high-level ministerial trip from India to China since the 2020 border tensions in Eastern Ladakh, according to The New Indian Express.
The visit represents a renewed effort by both countries to stabilise relations and rebuild mutual trust.
Singh will attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) defence ministers’ meeting, where he may also engage in discussions with Chinese Defence Minister Admiral Dong Jun.
This will be Singh’s first visit to China in his capacity as defence minister, having earlier travelled there as home minister.
The trip underscores the commitment by both sides to build on the understanding reached between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping during their October 2023 meeting, aimed at improving bilateral ties.
Meanwhile, on June 12, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong in New Delhi. They reviewed the progress in ties since their January talks and agreed to enhance “people-centric engagements,” as per the Ministry of External Affairs.
